Chet's SCUBA

This photo was taken in Roatan, Honduras on a trip with a group of SCUBA instructors. The young lady in the photo is my daughter, 13 years old at the time.

Chet's SCUBA

"Water, water, everywhere...!"

My love of water started when I was very young. I began competitive swimming at the age of 6 and continued through college, eventually specializing in butterfly and individual medely. At an early age, while vacationing in the Bahamas Islands, I began SCUBA diving.

Now living on the coast in Northern California, my favorite diving is in Monterey and along the coast north of the Russian River. But I still dream about that rare vacation to the tropics when I can shed the wet suit and sink into the warm blue depths.

"If it's worth doing, it's worth teaching!"

After moving to California in 1985 I renewed my interest and eventually earned my YMCA dive instructors certificate. I have been teaching with a group called Get Down Divers here in Silicon Valley.

Get Down Divers is run by YMCA instructor Roger Dunton from Scotts Valley and is a dynamic group of divers dedicated to teaching fun and safe diving in the YMCA tradition.

My instructor duties are usually limited to ocean class dives in Monterey but I periodically help out in the classroom and pool sessions held in Sunnyvale.

Free diving for Abalone

While loving all aspects of diving, I have a special interest in the freedom of free diving. The pure joy of twisting and turning amoung the kelp stalks, lungs aching for air, is my first love. Like the sea otters of the California coast I look forward to hunting abalone in the wild surf of Northern California.

Each year the first week in April I head up the coast north of the Russian River for the opening of abalone season, no weather or surf conditions too grim to stop us. And again like the sea otters, our family's favorite food is abalone, cooked or raw, ala sushi.
